CF Sola 19, Day 8: Sarria-Portomarin

15/06/2019

How many favourite days can a pilgrim have? When I set out from St Jean in 2012, my companion had brought gold star stickers to mark her favourite days and ended up sticking them on each and every diary entry. That’s how the walk from Sarria feels. OK, so there might be more people on … More CF Sola 19, Day 8: Sarria-Portomarin

CF Sola 19, Day 7: Triacastela-Sarria

12/06/2019

From Triacastela there are two paths to Sarria – one shorter, via San Xil, and one longer, via Samos, with its once incredibly powerful monastery which still hosts pilgrims in the old buildings. As you leave Triacastela you see these two markers (reasonably) clearly pointing out the two alternatives. Then as you get onto the … More CF Sola 19, Day 7: Triacastela-Sarria

CF Sola 19, Day 6: O Cebreiro-Triacastela

11/06/2019

Having a room instead of sleeping in an albergue meant I could wake up in my own time, nice and refreshed, and have a leisurely breakfast of café con leche and Santiago cake at my favourite table downstairs. Then it was off to find one of the two lovely green paths out of O Cebreiro, … More CF Sola 19, Day 6: O Cebreiro-Triacastela

CF Sola 19, Day 5: Vega de Valcarce-O Cebreiro

10/06/2019

Finally, the day of my subida favorita – my favourite uphill. Yogi and I went for a morning coffee, and who did we bump into but Piia! Suitably refreshed we started walking towards Herrerias at the bottom of the O Cebreiro climb. Walking at different speeds we agreed to meet at the last bar, by … More CF Sola 19, Day 5: Vega de Valcarce-O Cebreiro

CF Sola 19, Day 4: Villafranca-Vega de Valcarce

06/06/2019

One of the big topics the night before was whether or not people were taking the winding tarmac trail next to the road or going ‘up and over’, meaning the camino duro or Pradela route – or The Donkey Killer as we call it – a steep up and steep down greener route, significantly prettier … More CF Sola 19, Day 4: Villafranca-Vega de Valcarce

CF Sola 19, Day 3: Ponferrada-Villafranca

05/06/2019

In the morning the two who came home last, were also last to leave the room. We had a coffee downstairs instead of in town, and then I went up to the square, which was almost empty at this time. Then I did what I always do when I leave Ponferrada – I got a … More CF Sola 19, Day 3: Ponferrada-Villafranca

CF Sola 19, Day 2: Acebo-Ponferrada

04/06/2019

Ah, the joys of the albergue. I had quite forgotten about the squeaky toilet door in the Mesón, which is still squeaking as loudly as ever. Coupled with the automatic light, it is bound to wake even dog tired pilgrims up. So when someone went to the toilet in the night, he or she woke … More CF Sola 19, Day 2: Acebo-Ponferrada

CF Sola 19, Day 1: Rabanal-Acebo

03/06/2019

Finally the day had come – I was going to start walking again. And from Rabanal, one of my favourite places, to Acebo, one of my favourite walks. I am a lucky, lucky girl! The weather and temperature were both perfect. After finishing my packing – still not got the hang of it, I never … More CF Sola 19, Day 1: Rabanal-Acebo

Camino Sola ’19, Day 0 x 3

02/06/2019

This time there really were three Day 0 before my camino started properly. The first was the day I finished my packing and left the house with my Scouse Spouse to spend the night in Liverpool. The flight to Dublin was so early that I would have needed a taxi to make it, and the … More Camino Sola ’19, Day 0 x 3

Un-packing list CF Sola ’19

27/05/2019

Yes, I am back! There will be words, but Life has been a bit overwhelming in the (is it really??) week and a half since I came home. Anyway, having done the packing photo thing, I will now do the un-packing list thing before I forget. I carried: Osprey Tempest 30 pack, brilliant as always, … More Un-packing list CF Sola ’19

Highlights from the longest day of our #slowstroll over the incredible Pyrenees hills, across the border into Spain and down to the old monastery and pilgrim safe haven of Roncesvalles - hot and tired but completely in awe of the beauty of the green hills we had the privilege to walk through! #challengeaccepted #caminoconfidence #caminodesantiago2026 Highlights from the day we started out from St Jean Pied de Port on our #slowstroll over the green hills to the vibrant city of Pamplona. It was hot, it was steep in places, but it was beautiful and so, so worth the effort #challengeaccepted #caminoconfidence #caminodesantiago2026 Highlights from the day we met up in St Jean Pied de Port to start our #slowstroll over the green hills to the vibrant city of Pamplona. New faces, same excitement as we sat down to our first meal together. #challengeaccepted #caminoconfidence #caminodesantiago2026 Took the twisty-turny bus journey to St Jean Pied-de-Port and arrived in the gorgeous medieval French town at the foot of the Pyrenees, with time to rest and explore #pilgrimlife #caminodesantiago2026 #caminoconfidence #slowstroll #nidarosawalking Glorious camino morning, started from Zuriain to find the river route back into Pamplona, found bird boxes with words painted under them, made a friend when looking for more words on birdboxes, visited the ancient church in Zabaldika and had my new friend ring Navarra's oldest bell for my oldest friend, decided against the river route, arrived back in my pod in Albergue Ibarrola and was then promptly laid out with a 24 hr bug. All part of #pilgrimlife #caminodesantiago2026 #caminoconfidence #slowstroll #nidarosawalking I'm off again! Flew to Pamplona, stayed in a brilliant pod in Albergue Ibarrola, met some travel companions, said hello to Hemingway, treated myself to tapas in Café Iruña and bar Gaucho, walked up to the walls to look out over Navarra, then early to bed to go for a warm-up walk before my #slowstroll #caminoconfidence #pilgrimlife #caminodesantiago2026 #nidarosawalking Some great menu choices - lemon yogurt, chocolate Santiago cake, wine on a glacier designed rock at sunset. Living my best #caminolife #Camino2026 #BalancingStone #nidarosawalking #somewhereslowly Glorious day on the #CaminoFinisterre #Camino2026 meeting lovely people and enjoying the trail, the time and the Galician tree tunnels.
