Leaving Vila do Conde we had options – we chose to follow a long, quiet street straight back to the beach, and met two German ladies going the opposite way to follow their chosen path. The Wise Pilgrim app was invaluable on this walk, highly recommended!
Safely back on the sandy path, we walked past memorials and tributes to sailors and fishermen of the past, a reminder that the Atlantic not only gives, but also takes.

The route is full of little surprises, like this church/lighthouse combo, a tiled history of the town, and a bifana with eggs and/or bacon for second breakfast.

Again it was not all sandy beaches, there were green patches and round little towers dotted at regular intervals along the coast, some falling apart, some freshly painted.

There was even some shade on this day’s walk, and we needed it, because it was hot. At one point we split up for half an hour so she could go to the beach and I went the opposite way, to a brown bar with old men in flat caps, but also ice cold drinks (and a toilet) as there wasn’t anywhere on the trail. I was wearing my long sleeved, very light top to protect from the sun, but I missed Polly the Parasolly, my UV reflecting, big canopy umbrella – it would have been perfect. I left it because I assumed there would be too much wind too often. If you have one, take it.
Luckily for us, I had booked a twin room in Villa dos Corcéis, which also has a pool! When we arrive, we have a system – I jump in the shower, she chills and stretches. This time I collapsed on my comfortable bed, she dropped everything and jumped in the pool, where she was promptly offered a glass of cold white wine. One of the best places I have stayed on any camino.

It was so hot I had to cover up when I plopped down on the sun lounger after showering and hanging my laundry out. We walked to the nearest food place, which served a good selection of smaller dishes – it was all we had the appetite for in the heat. Then back to our little slice of heaven to sit outside in the cool evening. Bliss!
I remember that tiled wall (in Povoa de Varzim if I’m not mistaken). You had a hot day, we had rain all day! And what a lovely overnight spot – I can only imagine what a joy it must have been at the end of a hot day!
That’s very possible – I really should have made notes of the places things and views were, but they kind of all melt together after a while. Such a glorious, long ocean view, I am hoping to repeat it in the next couple of years.
