Nanci’s birthday! We had two treats planned: a sushi meal and shopping at Decathlon in Vigo. But first – a trio of beaches for a birthday walk. From the other side of the river we followed green shells and arrows instead of the normal yellow – this is an alternative, beach heavy route.

Beach one: Praia America, a long, sweeping, picture perfect sandy beach, popular and well used. We stopped for a second coffee in Nigrán at the other end while feasting our eyes on swimmers, walkers, dogs, horses, and also a good smattering of pilgrims.

Beach two: Praia de Madorra, a smaller, greyer, empty beach we didn’t linger on.

Beach three: Praia de Patos (map shows up several names dotted along), Birthday girl’s favourite, with a view of the craggy Cies islands. It was lively with swimmers, surfers, hand-holding couples, grandparents, kids, dogs racing around, lots of sun, sand and sea. Could have stayed all day.

We went to sit down for a birthday drink at a beach bar that served no food, but … across the street was a busy little Mexican restaurant, so Nanci chose a few goodies for us.

Then, with it being her birthday, our Decathlon shopping plans and the Compostela requirement kicking in from Vigo, we hotfooted it to the big city, where we had rooms in a small hotel in the old town. Not that anything seems very old in Vigo, compared to other towns and cities. In fact we found it very uninspiring and missed the little villages and wonky hotels.
It was too early to go for sushi, and since it was Sunday, Decathlon was closed! So we decided to go up to the castle to get some views.

Then it was time for the birthday sushi – I have been following the Taberna do Sushi on Instagram a while and really looked forward to visting. They had a menu deal on, with lots of things to try, so we went for that. It did not disappoint!

We stuffed ourselves silly and rolled back to the hotel in the early evening to enjoy the big beds in our tiny but cleverly designed single rooms. Look at the lovely wallpaper in mine!

Lovely beaches and castle! But that wallpaper steals the show!!
It certainly added a touch of fabulousness to the day, though I have to say I loved that last beach.
